Dr. Slotter's Teaching Philosophy

In the classroom, as a social psychologist, I seek to inform students about how the social world influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions. I aim to make classes enjoyable and engaging while providing a solid framework of psychological theories and presenting both classic and cutting edge research findings. Across my courses, my overarching goal is to have students leave the classroom, not only with the knowledge of psychological principles, but also having critically examined their preconceptions regarding human cognition, affect, and behavior.

Dr. Slotter's Mentoring and Advising Approach

I am always happy to meet with students (undergraduates or graduates) to discuss...anything! Feel free to email me if you'd like to set up a time to talk.

If you are interested in completing a Master's thesis with me, please contact me via email so that we can set up a time to meet in person and discuss your ideas. I only supervise one or two students per year, and I give students who are active in my lab first crack at working with me, so get in touch with me early (i.e., early spring of your first year). If we work together, be prepared to start writing in the spring and summer of your first year.

I would generally describe my mentoring approach as flexible. I want to help you meet your goals, but I also want you to be the driving force behind what we're working on. I meet with my thesis students approximately weekly but encourage them to set deadlines they can realistically meet.
